Safety: Winter weather and managing the cold
As we head into the New Year, the Safety Department and management would like to remind all employees of the hazards associated with the winter months.
When traveling to and from work, or job to job, ensure your vehicle is properly cleaned off (free of snow and ice) prior to driving. Leave yourself an acceptable travel distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Periodically check your mirrors to monitor other driver activities, and if necessary, pull off to the side and let the tailgating vehicle pass. When approaching an intersection, rotary or stop sign, always leave yourself an out.

Snow and Ice accumulations in walkways or common areas could lead to slip, trip and fall hazards. Be sure to communicate with customers or general contractors if there is an area that needs to be addressed. Apply ice melt/sand when necessary, if we are in charge of the job site. Always walk in the safest path to and from your destination. Avoid roof or ladder work when possible in hazardous weather conditions.
Cold Stress, such as hypothermia and frostbite are also a hazard of the winter months. If working outside, ensure you are dressing in layers (layering provides better insulation) and bring a change of clothes with you in the event you get wet while working. Ensure you are taking breaks as needed in warm dry areas. Understand the symptoms of cold stress (reddening skin, tingling, pain, swelling, leg cramps, numbness and blisters). Most importantly, we want you to monitor your physical condition, as well as your coworkers. If you see a fellow coworker struggling, exercise Stop Work Authority and get the employee to a warm dry area, or medical attention if necessary.
The Safety Department and management would like to thank everyone for their continued efforts in bringing Safety to the Next Level, and we hope everyone has a nice, SAFE holiday season!
